A Guide to the Human Skeletal System

Have you ever wondered what skeletal system is made of? The bones of the body are well explained in this article.

The body’s mechanical support comes from the bones of the body. All parts of the body get support from the skeletal system. Movement is facilitated by the skeletal system.

Over 200 bones, cartilage and the ligaments make up the skeletal system. The skeletal system is made up of bones, ligaments, and cartilage.

The bones and the teeth are the most visible in a model of the skeleton structure. If you happen to be keen you will be able to see all the constituent parts of the skeleton model. The ligaments and the cartilage are also very basic parts of the skeleton.

For the proper functioning of the joints, the ligaments must be there. The bands of dense and fibrous connective tissues are what we refer to as the ligaments. On the other hand cartilage is responsible for the structure of the larynx and the nose. The flexibility of the cartilage is higher than that of the bones.

The bones give the body the structure and enables movement. The skull helps to protect the brain and is responsible for the structure of the face. The spine consists of over 30 bones. The three limbs that consist the skeletal system includes the upper and lower limbs as well as the girdles. The four limbs are attached to the vertebral column by the girdle.

The skull is made up of several bones which surround the brain thereby giving it protection. The heart and the lungs are enshrouded by the thoracic cavity giving them protection. On the other hand the vertebral column gives the spinal cord structure as well as the protection.

You should know that the muscles all over the body are attached to the bones. The nerves in the muscles give the muscles the signal to move. When the nervous system sends the commands to the skeletal muscles, the muscles contract. When the muscles contract movement is created at the joints between the bones.

The two groups of the bones consist of the axial and appendicular skeletons. Movement is facilitated by the appendicular skeleton while internal organs are protected by the axial skeleton.

The axial skeleton is made up of the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage while the appendicular skeleton consists of the girdles and the limbs.

The five types are: the long bones like the femur, the flat bones like the frontal bone, the patella or the knee cap is typed as the sesamoid bone and the short bones which includes the bones at hand (carpal) and the bones in the feet ( tarsals).
